This standard provides technical and test specifications and requirements for interconnection and interoperability for distributed energy sources (DERs). In addition, several appendices are included in this standard that provide additional informational material but are not required to be used with this standard.

This document provides a uniform standard for the interconnection and interoperability of distributed energy sources with electrical power systems. It provides requirements for interconnection and interoperability performance, operation and testing, and safety, maintenance, and safety considerations.

On February 12, 2020, the National Association of Regulatory Service Commissioners (NARUC) Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution presented by Commissioner Schuerger (MN) recommending that government commissions adopt and implement the new revised distributed energy sources interconnection standard.

The resolution provides flexibility to state commissions that recognize unique procedures, priorities, and needs for each state; Using existing research and experience to make evidence-based decisions, while recognizing technical experts and best practices set by IEEE 1547 to assemble a stakeholder process, and aligning the implementation of the standard with the availability of certified equipment.
