EN ISO 13790 Energy Performance of Buildings - Calculating Energy Use for Space Heating and Cooling

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 13790 testing. EN ISO 13790 gives calculation methods for evaluating the annual energy use for space heating and cooling of a residential or non-residential building or part of it referred to as a "building".

EN ISO 13790 Energy Performance of Buildings - Calculating Energy Use for Space Heating and Cooling

This International Standard is one of a number of calculation methods for the design and evaluation of the thermal and energy performance of buildings. It offers a consistent set of calculation methods at different levels of detail for the energy use for space heating and cooling of a building and the impact of the recoverable thermal losses of technical building systems such as the heating and cooling system.

This method includes the calculation of:

  • Heat transfer through conduction and ventilation of the building zone when heated or cooled to a constant internal temperature;
  • Contribution of indoor heat and solar heat gains to the building heat balance;
  • Annual energy requirement for heating and cooling to maintain specified setpoint temperatures in the building.

EN ISO 13790 also provides an alternative simple hourly method using hourly user programs (such as temperature setpoints, ventilation modes or moving sun shading work schedules).

Procedures are given for using more detailed simulation methods to ensure compatibility and consistency between the application and the results of different types of methods. EN ISO 13790, for example, provides common rules for boundary conditions and physical input data, regardless of the computational approach chosen.

EN ISO 13790 can be applied to buildings in the design phase and existing buildings. Input data requested directly or indirectly by EN ISO 13790 must be available from the building files or the building itself. Otherwise, it is clearly stated in the relevant parts of EN ISO 13790 that it can be decided at the national level to allow other sources of information. In this case, the user reports which input data is used and from which source. Normally, for energy performance assessment for an energy performance certificate, a protocol is defined at the national or regional level to specify the type of information sources and the conditions under which they can be applied rather than the exact input required.
