This Standard will be used in conjunction with EN 6059-100. The main purpose of this test is to produce electric arcs in a controlled manner in the immediate vicinity of a protection sleeve or pipe and to examine the possible consequences on cables that must be kept in a safe condition within this protection. These electrical arcs represent what may occur in service if a typical wiring harness is severely damaged.

To optimize the thickness and mass of such protection, a current limit needs to be associated with each sleeve or pipe structure.

The protection sleeves or pipes to be tested shall be of traceable origin and, unless otherwise stated, shall have passed the voltage proof test (EN 6059-501) as defined in the relevant product standard. Unless otherwise specified in the relevant technical product standard, at least one protection sleeve size shall be evaluated per sleeve thickness or construction type (if different from one dimension to another). If possible, testing for each thickness or type of structure should be carried out on a sample of the minimum allowable thickness or minimum allowable mass.
