Fungi and microbial organisms can damage the operation and appearance of products operated in hot and humid environments. Operationally, fungal growth can cause corrosion, mechanical failure, premature wear, and undesirable electrical conduction pathways. Aesthetically, fungal growth causes products to be less attractive and may result in devices not being used even if they have no effect on operations. Fungal infections can occur when fungus is transferred from a product to a user.
Materials such as hydrocarbons, leather, paints, paper, plastics, polyurethanes, PVC and wood can serve as fuel and nutrients for the growth of living fungi. Even materials that are resistant to fungi can promote fungal growth when given external contaminants such as liquids, organic matter, and sweat. This is why there are no products or materials that are truly resistant to fungi.
Fungal resistance testing is the process of introducing a naturally occurring spore into a product or material. Some of the more common spores are Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus versicolor, penicillium funiculosum, and Chaetomium globosum.
After the spore is applied, it is placed in a room with a warm and humid environment. Testing or vaccination time can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the requirements and the sport(s) being promoted. The determining factor for fungal growth is food. If the material contains food and nutrients, the fungus will grow.
