Chemical conversion coating is used in the manufacture of aerospace products to improve paint adhesion and corrosion resistance. This process can also be used for retouching anodic coatings.
By far the most widely used chemical conversion coatings for aerospace products are chromates. However, components can be used to produce other chemical conversion coatings, provided they meet the requirements of this document without adverse effects on the base material.
The cleaning method used will create a clean surface that is free from water breakage and free from pits and wear marks. Solvent degreasing and cleaning in a non-abrasive or inhibited alkaline cleaner followed by rinsing with cold tap water may be used.
If the alkaline cleaner is silicate, the bath composition and subsequent rinsing should be controlled to avoid formation of siliceous residue on work surfaces that could prevent the deposition of a satisfactory conversion coating.
