This standard specifies requirements for chemical analysis using the Inert Gas Fusion Thermal Conductivity Method for the determination of the hydrogen content of titanium and titanium alloys for aerospace applications.
The method is applicable for hydrogen contents ranging from a few micrograms per gram to several hundred micrograms per gram. The drawing shall apply when referenced in the EN technical specification or material standard, unless otherwise specified in the order or inspection schedule.
Resources, test pieces, test specimens, test materials, test equipment and test procedures shall comply with current health and safety regulations of the countries where testing will be performed. Where materials or reagents that may be hazardous to health are indicated, appropriate measures will be taken in accordance with local regulations or laws.
The test consists of thermal decomposition of hydrogenated compounds (mostly as metallic hydrides) found in titanium or titanium alloys. The degassed hydrogen is sent in a supporting inert gas stream to the sensing system (thermal conductivity cell), which provides a quantitative measurement (comparative) of the hydrogen content.
Sampling is carried out in dry conditions, without lubricant, using tools cleaned with solvents (blade saw, drilling, pelletizing, excluding hot clipping, protective paint removed by cleaning with solvents and abrasive paper).
