This test method describes principles applicable to the infrared transmission spectrophotometric analysis of organic compounds (elastomers, basic resins, resin mixtures or resin systems) used as matrix in reinforced polymers, adhesives, binder primers and in general all organic compounds.
The method can also be applied to some inorganic products. It is intended for use with the specific test conditions specified in the material specification that initiated the test.

Organic molecules consist of atoms bonded together. Many bonds vibrate at a characteristic frequency in the infrared (IR) range. If a monochromatic IR beam hits the molecule and its frequency corresponds to the natural frequency of vibration between functional groups, the energy from the beam is absorbed.
Therefore, changing the wavelength of the beam produces a series of absorption lines corresponding to various molecular bonds. This series of lines forms a spectrum. The sample is exposed to a beam at all frequencies of interest, and a computer determines which wavelengths are absorbed. The preferred method is Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR).
