The DO-160 standard, published by the Radio Technical Aviation Commission (RTCA), is a standard designed for environmental testing of avionic equipment. This standard replaces the previously published DO-138 standard.
The RTCA DO-160G standard provides standard procedures and environmental testing criteria for testing airborne equipment for the entire range of aircraft, from light general aviation aircraft and helicopters to jumbo jets and supersonic aircraft. The question scale consists of 26 sections and three appendices. Examples of tests covered include vibration, power input, radio frequency sensitivity, lightning, and electrostatic discharge.
The purpose of these tests is to provide a controlled way to ensure the performance characteristics of air equipment under the same environmental conditions when operating air equipment. Environmental test conditions and standard test methods are used in conjunction with applicable equipment performance standards as a minimum specification under environmental conditions that provide adequate performance reliability during aircraft use.
The RTCA DO-160G standard is recognized by the International Standards Organization (ISO) as ISO-7137 (ISO 7137 Aircraft equipment environmental requirements and test equipment standard). This ISO standard lists various environmental conditions and test methods for airborne equipment and is primarily intended for civil and transport aircraft applications.
