Iron was used in ancient times, but iron began to be used much later than gold, copper and bronze. Today, iron is the main raw material in many sectors and while the economic development levels of the countries are expressed, the consumption of iron and steel per capita is an important parameter.
At first, iron ore with blast furnace characteristics was produced directly in the mines. However, since the demand for iron has increased too much, and the amount of iron ore that will be given directly to the blast furnace has decreased, low-grade iron ores have started to be used today.
It is found in the form of iron ores, magnetite, hematite, limonite, goethite, siderite and pyrite minerals in nature. When making iron ore analysis in accredited laboratories, different definitions are taken into account. For example, tufted iron ore is the naturally occurring ore that was first extracted from the quarry. Fragment ore is the ore, the size of which is reduced to a maximum of 150 millimeters after being crushed and sieved. Powder ore is the ore, the dimensions of which are under 10 millimeters.
Sintered concentrated iron ore is enriched iron ore with a maximum size of 25 millimeters. Caliber iron ore is iron ore with a maximum size of 30 millimeters. Impurities are substances that are not desired to be in iron ore. Among these, elements and compounds such as silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, sulfur, copper, arsenic, titanium, phosphorus, sodium oxide, potassium oxide, lead and zinc.
