Chemically bound antimicrobial agents are not free to spread around under normal use conditions. Said test method provides good contact between bacteria and the treated fiber, fabric or other substrate, with continuous shaking of the test sample in a test suspension during the test period. The metabolic status of the test processes directly affects the measurements of the effectiveness of certain antimicrobial agents or agent concentrations. This test method standardizes growth conditions and substrate contact times to reduce variability associated with the growth phase of the microorganism.
The test method presented to the ASTM E2149-13a standard is designed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of non-leakproof, antimicrobial-treated samples under dynamic contact conditions. This test method has been developed for routine quality control and screening tests to overcome difficulties in using other test methods. The main difficulties encountered are contact of the inoculation to the treated surface, the flexibility to undo at different contact times, the use of improperly applied static conditions, precision and repeatability.
