ASTM E2180-18 Standard Test Method to Determine the Effectiveness of Antimicrobial Substances in Polymeric or Hydrophobic Materials

ASTM E2180-18 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the properties and testing methods of antimicrobials found in hydrophobic materials such as plastics, epoxy resins and other hard surfaces. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM E2180-18 Standard test method to determine the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents found in polymeric or hydrophobic materials.

The test method described here is used to evaluate the effectiveness of antimicrobials. With this test method, the percentage of reduction in bacterial cells surviving against those recovered from an untreated control is determined within 24 hours. The hydrophobic substrate can be repeatedly tested over time to evaluate permanent antimicrobial activity.

The test method presented in the ASTM E2180-18 standard was originally designed to quantitatively evaluate the antimicrobial activity of agents that are incorporated or bound to two-dimensional and flat hydrophobic or polymeric surfaces. This method primarily focuses on the evaluation of antibacterial activity. However, other microorganisms such as yeast and fungal conidia can also be tested using this method.

This test method detects the presence of antimicrobial activity on plastics or hydrophobic surfaces, and allows the determination of quantitative differences in antimicrobial activity between untreated plastics or polymers and those having water soluble antimicrobial agents attached or incorporated. Comparisons are also made between the number of survivors on their hydrophobic surfaces treated with preservatives.

This test method also gives the determination of the shelf life or long-term durability of an antimicrobial treatment obtained by testing both washed and unwashed samples over a period of time.

Within the framework of laboratory test services, ASTM E2180-18 provides standard test services to our companies to determine the effectiveness of antimicrobial substances in polymeric or hydrophobic materials.
