ASTM F1862-17 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Facial Masks to Penetration with Synthetic Blood

The ASTM F1862-17 standard published by the American Testing and Materials Organization (ASTM) describes the resistance properties and test methods of medical face masks to synthetic blood penetration. The full name of this standard is as follows: ASTM F1862-17 Standard test method for the resistance of medical face masks to penetration with synthetic blood (horizontal projection of constant volume at known speed).

ASTM F1862-17 Standard Test Method for Resistance of Medical Facial Masks to Penetration with Synthetic Blood

Said test method includes a procedure for determining the penetration resistance of medical facial masks and evaluating their performance. However, it does not define acceptable penetration resistance levels. This determination is left to the specific conditions of each user organization.

Medical face masks are used to protect against splashing of blood, body fluids and other potentially infectious substances. There are many factors that affect performance here: surface tension, viscosity and polarity of fluid, wetting and penetration properties of body fluids, structure of materials, and relative hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity.

The test method presented in the ASTM F1862-17 standard is used to assess the resistance of medical face masks to penetration with the effect of a small volume of high-speed synthetic blood flow. The success or failure of the test results is based on the visual detection of synthetic blood penetration. However, this test method does not apply to all conditions of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

This test method primarily addresses the performance of the materials used in medical face masks. It does not address the performance of other factors that have the potential to affect protection, such as filtration efficiency and pressure drop offered by the design, structure or interfaces of the medical face mask. Test methods for determining these properties are included in the standard manual for chemical selection when evaluating ASTM F1001-12 Protective clothing materials and in MIL M 36954: C Mask, surgical, disposable standard.

Within the framework of laboratory test services, ASTM F1862-17 Medical face masks are also provided by our organization for standard resistance to synthetic blood penetration resistance.
