EN 12791, a European standard, describes the requirements and test methods for the surgical hand disinfection agent.
This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 12791 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics - Surgical hand disinfection - Test method and feature (phase 2, step 2).
Prior to surgical interventions in medicine, antiseptic treatment of the team's hands is a standard procedure used worldwide to reduce the risk of infection. There are essentially two different types of antiseptic: alcohol-based hand scrubs and antimicrobial liquid detergents.
Many standards have been developed to determine the antimicrobial effectiveness of such preparations. The European standard EN 2005, published in 12971, is one of them. This standard provides a test method for antimicrobial efficacy, which allows to reduce the built-in hand flora.
This test method evaluates whether a product for surgical hand disinfection reduces the release of clean hand flora and is applied for products used in surgical hand disinfection by friction, as in hygienic hand washing.
During the test, hands are washed first to remove temporary flora and foreign matter and then to determine the number of bacteria before disinfection treatment. The test product is then applied and counts are performed immediately and three hours after disinfection.
In this way, the ratio of the values corresponding to the reduction factor before and after the disinfection process and obtained after three hours is obtained. The results should be compared with the results obtained with the surgical hand disinfection reference method applied to the same persons using propanol -1-60 percent.
In short, this European standard applies to surgical handrub or handwashing products used in areas and situations medically disinfected. Such indications generally occur in hospitals, healthcare facilities, dentists and clinics of nursing homes.
