EN 13868 Catheters, Test Methods for Bending Single Lumen Catheters and Medical Tubing

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 13868 standard. This standard specifies test methods for flexural properties for single lumen catheters and medical tubing as they relate to clinical ready device. The purpose of the standard is to ensure uniformity in the evaluation of pipe bending properties.

EN 13868 Catheters, Test Methods for Bending Single Lumen Catheters and Medical Tubing

Tubes for catheters and some other medical uses must be flexible, but they must also have an appropriate minimum strength. The strength and flexibility allow the tube to be easily transported so it can be bent around obstacles, for example within human anatomy.

However, not all flexible pipes behave the same when bending. Some pipes can be bent significantly without bending, ie without collapsing, thereby significantly reducing the cross-sectional area, while others can be bent easily. In catheter applications, this reduction in flow area can result in a drastic reduction in fluid flow.

This is a method for determining the kink resistance of the medical tubing for short-term use. A pipe is defined as bent when the bend causes a reduction in flow with more than 50% reduction in initial flow from the straight pipe.
