EN 1644-1 Non-Woven Compresses for Medical Use - Test for Non-Woven Fabrics

Generally, only physical and chemical testing will be required for routine quality control once biological testing requirements are met. Biological retesting may be necessary if modifications are made to the nonwoven fabric.

Non-woven fabrics used in the manufacture of compresses, before and after sterilization, must not pose a health hazard or release substances in quantities that would pose such a hazard under the conditions of use.

The nonwoven fabric must be stable with or without agents commonly used in wound management, including antiseptics and cleaning solutions.

"Abrasiveness" is also included among these physical properties in order to deal with the ability to adequately clean wounds, an important property of compresses. It is envisaged that a kinetic friction test (used in the paper industry) will be adapted to this particular case. However, due to the lack of validity of such a test in this particular context, it was preferred not to delay publication of the standard while further research studies were conducted.
