The distal tip should be tapered and very close to the needle for ease of insertion. When the needle is fully inserted into the catheter unit, the catheter tube should not extend beyond the heel of the needle bevel and be no more than 1 mm from it.

When viewed with normal or corrected-normal vision at 2,5 magnification, the needle tip should appear sharp and free of feather edges, burrs and hooks.
