ISO 11199 Both Arms Manipulated Aids - Requirements and Test Methods

The ISO 11199 standard, which has been re-published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), which is a European standard, consists of the following subsections under the main title "Walking aids manipulated by both arms - Requirements and test methods":

ISO 11199 Both Arms Manipulated Aids - Requirements and Test Methods

  • ISO 11199-1 Part 1: Walking frames
  • ISO 11199-2 Part 2: Rounders
  • ISO 11199-3 Part 3: Walking tables

The ISO 11199-1 standard describes the requirements and test methods for walking frames used as walking aids, manipulated with both arms, without accessories, unless specified in the specific test procedure. This standard also defines requirements for safety, ergonomics, performance and information provided by the manufacturer, including marking and labeling.

Requirements and testing are based on daily use of walking frames as walking aids for the maximum user base specified by the manufacturer. This standard includes walking frames specified for a user mass of not less than 35 kg.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • Walking frame refers to a four-prong or two-pronged and wheeled frame, with hand grips, without forearm support, which a person lifts to move, to support the whole body weight and maintain balance while walking or standing.
  • Brake refers to the device that slows or stops the movement of a walking frame by contact friction.
  • Handle refers to the part of the walking frame intended by the manufacturer to be handled while the walking frame is in use.
  • The front handle reference point refers to the position on the upper surface of the handle 30mm from the front end of the handle length.

A walking frame can be used when a person needs assistance with walking. The walking frame provides stability while walking and standing and reduces the risk of falling. Walking frames are designed to support the user in a frame to bear the user's full body weight.

The ISO 11199-2 standard describes the requirements and test methods for rollers used as ancillary products for walking with both arms manipulated wheels, without accessories, unless specified in the specific test procedure. This standard also defines requirements regarding safety, ergonomics, performance and information provided by the manufacturer, including marking and labeling. Requirements and testing are based on daily use of tumblers as walking aids for the maximum user base specified by the manufacturer. This standard includes reels specified for a user mass of not less than 35 kg. This standard does not apply to rollers with horizontal forearm supports that are classified as walking tables in ISO 11199-3.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • Rounder refers to a walking device with three or more wheels, which can be moved by pushing or pulling, that allows the person to maintain their balance while walking, has handles or a crossbar, and no forearm support.
  • Roller height refers to the vertical distance from the highest point of the handle to the ground surface.
  • Brake refers to the braking system actuated by the user to reduce the speed of the roller or to stop it completely while walking.

A rollator can be used when a person needs assistance with walking. The rollator provides stability while walking and standing and reduces the risk of falling. Rounders are designed to support the user in a frame to bear the weight of the user. This equipment can be equipped with a lounge chair, backrest or shopping bag. The rounder is not designed to be moved around in the seat like a wheelchair.

The ISO 11199-3 standard describes the requirements and methods for testing the static stability, braking abilities, static strength and fatigue of walking tables without accessory equipment, unless specified in the specific test procedure. In addition, requirements regarding safety, ergonomics and performance, marking, labeling and information provided by the manufacturer are defined. This standard covers all walking tables with three or more wheels or with ends resting on the walking surface and having arm supports in the form of a horizontal support table or two horizontal forearm supports. Requirements and tests are based on daily use of walking tables as walking aids for the maximum user base specified by the manufacturer. This standard includes walking tables specified for a user mass of not less than 35 kg.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • A walking table refers to a table that provides walking assistance with three or more legs, a wheeled support table, or horizontal forearm supports pushed forward by the upper arms, possibly in conjunction with the upper body.
  • Support table refers to the horizontal part of the walking table, shaped around the upper body, on which the arms rest when the walking table is in use. This table can be solid or split to allow individual adjustment to the user's needs.
  • The forearm brace refers to the horizontal, groove-shaped part of the walking table that the forearms rest on when the walking table is in use.
  • Folded dimensions refer to the height, width and length of the walking table as measured by folding the walking table to its minimum size without tools.
  • Handle means the part of the walking table that is intended to be held by the manufacturer while the walking table is in use, the length of the handle, the size of the handle measured along the longitudinal axis of the handle, and the handle width, the outer dimension of the handle, the measurement at the thickest point of the hand, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

Our organization, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, also provides testing services for walking aid products that are manipulated by both arms, within the scope of ISO 11199 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
