Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 16212 standard has been published to explain microbiological yeast and mold properties and test methods in cosmetic products. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 16212 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Yeast and mold count.
The standard in question offers test methods for yeast and mold counts contained in cosmetic product by counting colonies in selective agar medium after aerobic incubation. In order to ensure product quality and safety for consumers, it is recommended to identify the types of cosmetic products to which the ISO 16212 standard is applied and to conduct an appropriate microbiological risk analysis. Products considered to have a low microbiological risk carry low water activity or excessive pH values. These products contain hydro-alcoholic products and are essentially subject to the ISO 29621 standard (TS EN ISO 29621 Cosmetics - Microbiology - Risk assessment and microbiological identification of low risk groups).
A wide variety of products are produced in the cosmetic world. For this reason, the instructions in this standard may not be suitable for some products. For example, some cosmetic products do not mix with water. Other methods are used in place of the tests presented here, provided they are shown to be equivalent or the method is appropriate. The choice of a particular method or combination of methods specified in these standards depends on the purpose of the test.
