Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 20645 standard has been published to describe the agar diffusion plate test method for determining antibacterial activity in textile products. The full name of this standard is as follows: ISO 20645 Textile fabrics - Determination of antibacterial activity - Agar diffusion plate test.
The standard in question provides a test method for determining the effect of antibacterial applications on woven, knitted and other plain textile fabrics. This standard applies to testing the hygienic surfaces of hydrophilic and breathable materials or antibacterial products added to the fiber. In this agar test method, the lowest antibacterial application diffusion is required. The ISO 20645 standard also applies to other materials, provided that it is properly applied. This test method is not suitable for testing textile products treated with antibacterial processes that react with agar.
Applying an antimicrobial finish to a textile product prevents bacterial growth, reduces the effects of microbial trace products, prevents biodegradation and reduces the effects of microbiogenic odors. This test method qualitatively determines the activity of such treatments when different products are compared. When comparing different concentrations of the same product, semi-quantitative information is obtained about the effect of treatments.

In the past, antibacterial applications to prevent economic losses caused by molds have been replaced by applications that take into account the toxic properties of human health today. Today, antibacterial activities have become more important in the finishing processes of textile products, on the one hand, due to skin ailments caused by fungi, and on the other hand, bad odors caused by bacteria.
