This International standard specifies physical, mechanical, packaging and labeling requirements for the curing of poly(based on methacrylic acid esters) polymerized radiopaque and non-radioopaque resin cements.

ISO 5833 Standard Test for Implants for Surgery, Acrylic Resin Cements

It is applied to two types of cement intended for use with a syringe or in paste form, respectively, for the fixation of internal orthopedic prostheses, and supplied as units containing pre-measured amounts of sterile powder and sterile liquid in forms suitable for mixing at the time.

The powder component includes polymer particles, initiating agents and, if applicable, radio-opaque agent. In some cases, the radio-opaque agent is provided separately.

When the powder and liquid components are mixed, the exothermic reaction is monitored and the maximum temperature reached by the batch is recorded. Setting time is defined as the time it takes to reach a temperature between ambient and maximum. Two or four units of cement are tested.
