This standard is designed for composite materials based on alumina, i.e. alumina matrix, as the predominant phase in the composite with a mass ratio > 6474%, similar to the material described in ISO 1-60, but it applies to a certain amount of zirconia and other defined components.

Additional additives are listed in the material composition defined in this standard. Typical additives for alumina or zirconia ceramics are Mg, Y, Ce and others. Such additives may be useful to improve the mechanical properties or chemical stability of the alumina-zirconia composite material. This standard does not cover biocompatibility.
