ISO 8536-5 specifies requirements for types of disposable, gravity-fed burette infusion sets with nominal capacities of 50 ml, 100 ml and 150 ml for medical use to ensure use compatibility with infusion solutions and containers of intravenous equipment.
ISO 8536-5 also provides guidance on specifications regarding the quality and performance of materials. The burette infusion set must be equipped with protective caps to maintain the sterility of the internal parts of the set until the set is used.
The burette should consist of a tube of rigid or semi-rigid plastic material and should allow observation of the liquid in the chamber. The burette shall have a filtered air discharge feature located above the upper rating mark. The burette shall have the capacity to take liquid from the main vessel, to be closed and to act as a separate self-ventilated reservoir.
Grading lines shall be clear, legible and durable, evenly spaced lines of equal thickness and lie in planes at right angles to the axis of the burette. The zero position mark on the chamber should be positioned to compensate for the volume displaced by any shut-off device, the position of the outlet relative to the bottom of the burette, or any other feature of the bottom cover that may affect the reading.
