ISO TS 13498 specifies a method for determining the torsional yield strength and maximum torque of implant body/fitting joints of intraosseous dental implant systems. This test is most suitable for the evaluation of new types of joints and fittings as well as new materials.
ISO TS 13498 provides a protocol for torsional loading of an implant body/fitting joint. It is not valid for predicting the in vivo performance of an intraosseous dental implant system and is not derived from observations of clinical failure.
Most dental implant systems currently on the market use a dental implant body that is placed in the jawbone, where other components can be combined while a prosthetic superstructure is constructed. The connection between these components and the implant body must be sufficiently rigid to resist chewing loads with a significant torsional component.
Implant systems therefore often include features to restrict rotation in the connection. If this is not strong enough, failure/breakage will occur in the connected components. A standard torsion test for the joint between the implant body and the connector facilitates comparative evaluation.
