JIS L 1902 Antimicrobial Fabric Test

Developed by the Japanese Industrial Standards organization (JIS), the JIS L 1902 standard has been published to describe a test method for testing antibacterial activity and effectiveness in textile products. This test method is designed to determine the ability of textile products treated with antimicrobial agents to prevent microbial growth and kill microorganisms over an 18 hour period.

The JIS L 1902 standard offers three test methods (one qualitative and two quantitative). The qualitative method is known as the Halo Method and is similar to an inhibition site method with few modifications. Absorption Method, which is one of the quantitative methods, is similar to the test method offered in AATCC 100 standard, another popular antimicrobial textile test method.

The JIS L 1902 standard has been published by the International Standards Organization (ISO) with little change as the ISO 20743 standard. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN ISO 20743 Textile - Determination of antibacterial activity in antibacterial finished fabrics.

Test methods presented in the JIS L 1902 standard are more carefully designed than an alternative antimicrobial fabric test method provided in the AATCC 100 standard. This test method is quantitative and the results are often reproducible. Both bacteriostatic (growth-inhibiting) and bactericidal (bacteria-killing) properties are tested on a particular antimicrobial fabric. On the other hand, this test method helps researchers estimate the accuracy of individual tests and provides triple tests that increase overall experimental accuracy.

However, this test method is not generally accepted for health claims by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

JIS L 1902 Antimicrobial fabric testing services are also provided to our businesses within the framework of laboratory testing services.
