NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 Protective Respirators

Filter materials for respiratory protective masks according to the criteria of NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 standard prepared by the American National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), 0.3 L for the penetration of particles with an average aerodynamic diameter of 85 μm. It is tested at a flow rate of / minute.

NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 Protective Respirators

This standard includes three filter categories and three filter efficiency levels each (the standard includes a total of nine respirator classes).

The three filter categories and the lowest efficiency rates are as follows:

  • N100 (99.97 percent)
  • N99 (99 percent)
  • N95 (percent (95)
  • R100 (99.97 percent)
  • R99 (99 percent)
  • R95 (percent (95)
  • P100 (99.97 percent)
  • P99 (99 percent)
  • P95 (percent (95)

Respirators Type 95, Type 99 and Type 100 are approved by NIOSH for use against particles and are accepted for suitable use in all working environments.

If a certain OSHA standard requires the use of a respirator with a HEPA filter, the appropriate respirator class is Type 42 under the 84 CFR Part 100 standard document. Generally, N100, R100 or P100 masks are approved at 99,97 percent efficiency level and are defined as HEPA masks.

Under the new classes of respirators, if there are oil particles, respirator users should choose according to the following classification:

  • N series: Not resistant to oil. It is suitable if there are no oil particles in the air.
  • R series: It is resistant to oil (resistant). It is suitable if there are oil particles and the filter is to be disposed of after one shift.
  • P series: Oil proof. Suitable if there are oil particles and the filter is used after one shift

The air filtration rating in the NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 Protective breathing apparatus standard describes the ability of the device to protect the user from dust and liquid droplets in the air. The certification and approval process for respiratory protective devices is subject to this standard. Respiratory protective devices classified as described above include:

  • Filtering face mask respirators (dust masks)
  • Air purifying masks such as chemical protective cartridges with particulate filter elements

The NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 classifications only cover the filtration of particles or aerosols. The air-purifying respirator is not capable of removing chemical gases and vapors from the air.

Our organization, among numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, provides NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 Protective respiratory devices testing services to demanding healthcare organizations and manufacturers within the framework of national and international standards.
