BMW AA 0061 Formaldehyde Emission from Non-Metallic Materials and Components

The work instruction describes the measurement of formaldehyde emissions from non-metallic materials and components using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method is also suitable for semi-quantitative determination of acetaldehyde emission.

The sample is stored in a constant temperature polyethylene bottle in a humid atmosphere. The bottle is partially filled with demineralized water. The emitted Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde are absorbed by the liquid. These aldehydes react with Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) to produce Hydrazones.

Hydrazones are determined by HPLC. Test results are given by calculating the concentration in mg/g with reference to the original dry mass of the sample.

Samples should be taken as representative of the area under investigation. Metal carriers must be removed. The size of the subsamples should be 40mm x 100mm according to the thickness of the part. Four samples should be taken from each piece, three for the aldehyde test and one for the moisture test.
