This standard does not claim to be the only method for OTR measurement. There may be other OTR determination methods using other oxygen sensors and procedures.

Many of the materials used in passenger car interiors emit chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most organic compounds release potentially toxic gases at high temperatures, and are characteristically released in colder conditions, including above room temperature.

Because automotive passenger cabins are virtually airtight and often recirculate cold or warm air for air conditioning, regulations for interior air quality are being enforced around the world, and the automotive industry is developing stringent testing standards to maintain compliance.

Original equipment manufacturers and parts suppliers rely on third-party automotive testing providers to evaluate the content of volatile organic compounds in interior upholstery materials.

The BMW GS 97014-2 standard requires automotive interior trim to be tested in a small thermostatic emission chamber. The 1 m3 chamber of this device allows volatile organic compound specialists to accommodate larger samples such as components and sub-assemblies compared to other methods that only support small material samples.

After a preconditioning period the sample is sealed inside the chamber and a constant internal airflow is maintained to capture volatile organic compounds emitted throughout the test period. These air samples are then analyzed using gas chromatography / mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) to identify and quantify the volatile organic compounds present.

Apart from the GS 97014-2 standard, room emission tests are also carried out according to various standards.
