BS 8442 Road Traffic Signs and Devices, Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of BS 8442 standard. This standard specifies requirements and tests for rigid and flexible portable signs, barriers, self-supporting portable signs, "Stop/Go" and "Stop/Run" signs.

It includes school crossing patrol signs, straight traffic limiters, wing signs, pedestrian crossing and bunker signs, interior illuminated poles, twin amber flashing light units, non-reflective road pylons and retroreflective self-leveling poles.

The given tests are suitable for both initial type testing and production testing. Non-reflective road struts containing an active light source are not covered by this standard.

This standard adds color requirements for a yellow prismatic retroreflective coating. This omission has limited the selection of retroreflective materials from which compliant temporary retroreflective road signs can be made.

The retroreflective feature ensures that safety-critical road signs are visible to drivers at night, identifying changes and hazards in roadworks. This type of reflection is achieved by controlling the direction of light returning to the drivers.

This standard now specifies performance requirements for each of the retroreflective colored areas used in these markings, using colorimetric requirements and retroreflective requirements.
