DIN 75201 Standard for Fogging Properties of Coating Materials in the Interior of Automobiles

The EUROLAB laboratory performs the DIN 75201 standard test for customers who want to determine the fogging properties of certain interior materials in motor vehicles. The DIN 75201 standard is a method developed by the German Standardization Institute that allows vehicle material manufacturers to test the level of condensation or evaporation of volatile compounds.

DIN 75201 Standard for Fogging Properties of Coating Materials in the Interior of Automobiles

Fogging occurs when high interior temperatures cause volatile and semi-volatile compounds (VOCs and SVOCs) inside a vehicle to condense on colder glass surfaces such as windshields, severely reducing outside visibility.

While performing the DIN 75201 standard, it carries out two related test methods;

Reflectometric Method

A sample material is placed in a beaker and covered with a glass plate before being heated to 100 degrees Celsius for three hours. The glass plate is simultaneously cooled to 21 degrees, allowing SVOC gases to condense on the glass. The Reflective Index of the fogged plate is then calculated and recorded.

Gravimetric Method

It is carried out by placing the sample in a beaker and covering it with an aluminum foil disc. The material is heated at 16 degrees Celsius for 100 hours, while the aluminum disc is cooled to maintain a temperature of 21 degrees. The released SVOC gases condense on the cooling disc and the total amount of fogging condensate collected can be measured after 16 hours.

Both reflectometric and gravimetric DIN methods are useful for customers who want to efficiently verify that the fogging values of a given material meet given manufacturing standards or OEM requirements.

Eurolab performs all DIN 17025 standard tests in our ISO 75201 approved automotive test laboratories. Our experienced staff uses specialized equipment to accurately evaluate the fogging properties of materials such as plastics, leather, textiles, adhesives and thermoplastic elastomers.
