The ECE R-90 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of the replacement of brake pads in motor vehicles.
This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of replacement brake lining assemblies, drum brake linings and discs and drums for motor vehicles and trailers.
The regulation in question applies to the basic brake function of the following spare parts:
Original brake discs and brake drums and spare discs and drums fitted at the time the vehicle was manufactured are not subject to this regulation.
The application for approval of the spare part for certain vehicle types is made by the manufacturer of the spare part or its duly approved representative. Along with the application, diagrams showing the functional dimensions of the spare brake pad assembly or the spare drum brake pad and the diagrams indicating the positions of the appropriate brake pad group or spare drum brake pad should be submitted to the technical service that will carry out the tests.
