The requirements and characteristics of voltage class B electrical circuits used for electric power transmission for the propulsion of electric road vehicles differ significantly from voltage class A electrical circuits. Also, the voltage class B range is too wide to be used for a voltage-related component design.
The ISO 21498 series divides voltage class B into a number of voltage subclasses to provide a component design for each voltage-related voltage subclass. It provides appropriate descriptions and definitions for the requirements and characteristics of voltage class B systems for electrically driven vehicles.
The voltage subclass itself and component properties have a large cost impact on component design and the overall design of the electrical system. In addition, a wide variety of different voltage subclasses and operating conditions preclude the use of an existing component in different vehicle models. Standardization of voltage subclasses and characteristics and reduction of assortment will reduce component and system costs.
This allows system or component designs of a voltage class B electrical circuit to be separated from the design of the electrical energy source. Finally, the exchange of components is facilitated for different customers from different suppliers.
This document provides definitions of and for voltage subclasses and specifications for rechargeable energy storage systems (RESS) and electric propulsion systems. It defines specific values for these subclasses based on the maximum operating voltage. The voltage subclasses listed in this document are used for voltage class B systems of all current or future electrically powered road vehicles.
ISO 21498-2 provides electrical tests for electrical and electronic components in voltage class B used for electrically powered road vehicles. All relevant features are covered, taking into account normal driving scenarios and deviations from normal operation. The explanations are generalized and include the purpose, setup, procedure and requirements of the tests.
The specifications in this document are not intended to limit the improvement of component performance or technology. The given definition of subclasses does not exclude the use of other maximum operating voltages for a separate system design.
