The clutch plate is mounted on a splined shaft that carries the rotational motion to the transmission. This shaft is called the clutch shaft or transmission input shaft. It is also known as the drive shaft of the gearbox. One end of the clutch shaft is connected to the crankshaft or flywheel and the other end is connected to or forms part of the transmission.

When the clutch pedal is depressed, its engagement forces the thrust bearing to move towards the flywheels and the compression springs are compressed, pressing the pressure plate away from the flywheel. This action relieves pressure on the clutch plate and the driveshaft comes to a fixed position.
