Volvo STD 422-0006 Resistance to Brief Contact with Liquids

The “Volvo STD 422-0006 Resistance to short-term contact with liquids” standard developed by the Volvo vehicle company describes a test method for evaluating the effects of splashes and similar effects of various fluids on plastic and rubber parts. This standard replaced the Renault D47 1924 standard developed by the French automobile company Renault.

Volvo STD 422-0006 Resistance to Brief Contact with Liquids

This testing method involves bringing various fluids into contact with parts that may occasionally come into contact with the fluids for a certain period of time and at a constant temperature, and observing the resulting cracking, swelling, dissolution and similar changes.

Test conditions such as temperature and contact time vary depending on:

  • Contact can only occur during maintenance in the aftermarket environment and therefore when the engine is cold. This applies, for example, to liquids that are not allowed to leak during normal operation, such as hydraulic oil and fuel.
  • Contact may occur under normal vehicle operating conditions, for example oils, antifreeze, spraying of windshield washer fluid, snow removal salt solution and the like. In such cases, fluid and part operating temperatures are taken into account.

Volvo STD 422-0006 standard includes two test procedures:

  • Method A: Testing on the part or on test pieces taken from the part
  • Method B: Test performed on test pieces on materials

If Method A is applied, whenever possible the tests are carried out on a piece or sample cut from a part of the product. If Method B is applied, tests on materials are performed on test pieces.

In general, these tests are performed in areas subject to large stress concentrations. Tests are carried out at the attachment points of the fasteners, if any. Screws and nuts are placed and torqued to the value specified in the functional drawing. If there are no tie points, testing is done at the injection point or high shear area. If the parts are produced by the extrusion-blowing method, test pieces are taken and processed perpendicular to the extrusion.

Both Method A and Method B include the following processes:

  • Process for non-volatile fluids
  • Process for volatile liquids
  • Process for battery acid and other acids

While evaluating the results, it is visually checked for any changes in appearance, cracks, tears, swelling, partial dissolution or similar situations.

Once the tests are completed, the report prepared includes the following information:

  • Reference to this standard
  • Specifications of the test piece and who the material supplier is
  • liquid type
  • Temperature and test time
  • Method A or B and process for non-volatile fluids, process for volatile fluids or process for battery acid and other acids
  • Test date
  • Any deviation from the standard
  • Number of test pieces used
  • Production date of test pieces
  • Any observations that may affect the result
  • Result of each test piece

Components used in industrial processes must be resistant to the process environments they come into contact with in this process. These mainly include lubricants, cleaning agents, acids, alkalis, solvents and gases. This resistance is determined by testing specific aging and related properties before and after aging in laboratory environments. One of the standards considered for testing the chemical resistance in question is the Volvo STD 422-0006 standard.

Briefly, through these tests, the resistance of plastic and rubber materials is evaluated by short-term exposure to various liquids.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services in accordance with the "Volvo STD 422-0006 Resistance to short-term contact with liquids" standard, with a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
