ECE R-28 Standard Test for Approval of Audible Warning Devices

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of voice warning devices and voice signals of motor vehicles.

This legal regulation covers sound warning devices designed to be mounted on certain categories of motor vehicles, fed directly or alternating current or compressed air and emitting a smooth and continuous sound (horn or signal horn). Such devices are audible warning devices that automatically activate (sound warning) when the vehicle is put into reverse gear.

For the purposes of this technical arrangement, audio warning devices essentially refer to devices different from each other. For example, sound warning devices differ with characteristics such as operating principles (continuous horn and intermittent alarm), type of electrical supply (direct or alternating current), external shape of the device, shape and dimensions of the diaphragm, shape or type of sound outputs, sound frequency and nominal supply voltage .

An application for approval of a type of buzzer is made by the trademark owner or his duly approved representative. A description of the class and type of audible warning device, a drawing showing the device in cross-section, a list of materials and components used in production, and detailed drawings of all components must be submitted.

According to its class, the audible warning device emits a continuous and regular sound and its acoustic spectrum does not change significantly during its operation. The device makes a smooth sound, and the number of cycles periodically varies between 50-100 revolutions per minute.
