ECE R-51 Standard Test for Motor Vehicle Noise Emission Approval

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of motor vehicles with at least four wheels in terms of noise emissions.

With regard to noise, this regulation applies to vehicles of category M (at least four-wheeled, motorized and used for passenger transport) and category N1 vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, motorized, used for cargo transport and with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tons). .

Within the framework of this application, the components of the noise reduction system are the components that make up the noise reduction system, especially exhaust pipes, expansion chambers and mufflers. Air filters are considered a component only if they are used to ensure compliance with prescribed sound level limits. However, manifolds are not considered components of the noise reduction system.

Application for approval of a vehicle type related to noise is made by the firm or its authorized representative. At the time of application, descriptions of the vehicle type, numbers and symbols identifying the engine type and vehicle type, a list of appropriately defined components that make up the noise reduction system, drawings of the combined noise reduction system, a diagram showing the position in the vehicle, and detailed information of each component so that it can be easily located and identified. drawings and properties of the materials used should be submitted to the technical service that will carry out the approval process.
