ECE R-54 Standard Test for Commercial Vehicle and Trailer Tires Approval

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R-54 standard. The ECE R-54 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of tires for commercial vehicles and trailers.

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of pneumatic tires for commercial vehicles and their trailers.

This regulation covers new pneumatic tires designed for the following vehicle categories:

• M2 category vehicles (at least four-wheeled, motorized vehicles with more than eight seats other than the driver, used for the transport of passengers and with a maximum mass not exceeding 5 tons);
• Vehicles of category M3 (at least four-wheeled, motorized, with more than eight seats other than the driver, used for the transport of passengers and with a maximum mass of more than 5 tonnes);
• N category vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, motorized and used for freight transport);
• O3 category vehicles (non-motorized vehicles with less than four wheels and a maximum weight exceeding 3.5 tons but not exceeding 10 tons, towed by a motor vehicle and used for the transport of goods);
• O4 category vehicles (non-motorized vehicles with less than four wheels and a maximum weight of more than 10 tonnes, towed by a motor vehicle and used for cargo transport).

The application for approval of a pneumatic tire is made by the manufacturer or its authorized representative. During the application, the tire size, use category (normal or snow), structure (diagonal or radial), speed category, load capacity indices, general section width and outer diameter, characteristics of the wheels on which the tire can be mounted, gauge pressure and test pressure index should be specified.
