ECE R-85 Measurement of Net Power and 30 Minutes Maximum Power of Electric Drive, M and N Class Motor Vehicles, Internal Combustion Engines

The ECE R-85 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the approval of internal combustion engines or electric propulsion devices designed for the propulsion of M and N class motor vehicles on the measurement of the net power and the 30-minute maximum power of the electric propulsion device.

This technical regulation contains uniform provisions regarding the measurement of net power and the approval of internal combustion engines or electric drive trains intended for the propulsion of motor vehicles with respect to the maximum power of 30 minutes of electric drive trains.

This regulation applies to vehicles of the following categories:

• Vehicles of category M (at least four-wheeled, motorized and passenger-carrying vehicles);
• N1 category vehicles (at least four-wheeled, motorized vehicles used for cargo transport and with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes);

Internal combustion engines belong to one of the following vehicle groups:

• Reciprocating engines (positive-ignition or compression-ignition), but excluding free-piston engines;
• Rotary piston engines (positive ignition or compression ignition);
• Naturally aspirated or compressor engines.

Electric drive trains consist of controllers and motors and are used to drive vehicles as a single drive mode.

Application for approval must be made by the vehicle manufacturer or its representative.
