ECE R100 Approval of Lithium Flash Battery Packs for Electric Vehicles

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R100 standard. The ECE R100 test regulation specifies all tests that must be performed on lithium batteries installed in 4-wheel electric vehicles for the transport of persons or goods with electric traction of category M and N road vehicles.

The regulation is part of an effort to create globally harmonized regulations for motor vehicles to remove barriers to international trade, promote road safety and protect the environment.

ECE R100 details safety testing requirements that expose lithium batteries to the main voltages present during their use with vehicles. Flash Battery has successfully completed the tests of the German Ministry of KBA and has been authorized to manufacture approved products.

Two types of batteries are approved specifically for electric vehicles – 10kWh and 15kWh, tested and approved in accordance with Legislative requirements. Secondary safety tests required to expose lithium batteries to the main voltages found during their use with vehicles:

Vibration Test: The logarithmic scanning sinusoidal waveform between 7Hz and 50Hz was then reverted to 15Hz at 7 minutes. Repeated 3 times for a total of 12 hours in the vertical mounting direction for REESS, 10G max.

Thermal Shock and Cycle Test: The test covers changes in extreme temperatures from -40C to +60C. Batteries are stored for 6 hours at -, then 6 hours at +60C for a total of 5 cycles.

Mechanical Shock: From 80ms to 28G, it is done in the positive or negative direction, or both, depending on the vehicle class. Typically done on a skid testing machine.

Mechanical Integrity: This test validates the safety performance of REESS under the contact loads that can occur during a vehicle collision. Crush 75KN using a 100mm radius crush plate.

Fire Resistance: This test verifies the REESS's resistance to exposure to fire from outside the vehicle due to fuel spillage. Open fuel fire preheating, consisting of 4 stages, followed by direct exposure of REESSS to flame, followed by indirect exposure to flame, followed by a cooling/reaction observation phase.

External Short Circuit Protection: This test is to verify the performance of the REESS protection against a short circuit condition. Less than 1mohm load is connected to REESS for at least 5 hour.

Overcharge Protection: This test is to verify the overcharge protection performance of REESS. REESS charges at 1/3C until the protection circuit interrupts or limits the charge.

Over Discharge Protection: This test is to verify the over-discharge protection performance of REESS. REESS discharges at a rate of 1/3C until the protection circuit stops or limits the discharge.

Over Temperature Protection: This test is to verify the internal overheat protection performance of REESS during operation even under cooling failure. REESS is cycled continuously at manufacturer's maximum continuous currents Charge/Discharge is gradually increased until ambient weather conditions stabilize temperatures or protection devices prevent charge and/or discharge of REESS.
