ECE R116 Approval of Technical Instructions for the Protection of Motor Vehicles Against Unauthorized Use

The ECE R116 regulation in question applies to:

• Approval of vehicles in categories M1 and N1 with regard to their devices to prevent unauthorized use
• Approval of vehicle alarm systems that are intended to be permanently attached to vehicles in the M1 and N1 categories and with a maximum mass of 2 tons
• With regard to alarm systems, approval of vehicles of categories M1 and N1 with a maximum mass of not more than 2 tons
• Approval of immobilizers and vehicles of category M1 and N1 and not more than 2 tons with regard to immobilizers

The vehicle categories to which this technical regulation applies are:

• M1 category vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, motor, no more than eight seats other than the driver and used for passenger transport)
• N1 category vehicles (vehicles with at least four wheels, motor, used for load carrying and with a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tons)

The application for approval of a vehicle or component type within the scope of this regulation is made by the manufacturer or its authorized person.
