An application for approval of a type of steering control for the protection of the driver against the steering mechanism in the event of a crash must be made by the steering control manufacturer or its duly accredited representative.

Each approved type will be given an approval number. Its first two digits will indicate the series of changes that contain the most recent major technical changes to the regulation at the time of approval. The same contracting party may not assign the same number to the same vehicle type or to another vehicle type equipped with another type of steering mechanism.

Approval or extension of approval or refusal of approval of a vehicle type pursuant to this Regulation shall be communicated to the parties to the agreement implementing this regulation through a form appropriate to the model in the Annex to this regulation.

If the vehicle conforms to a vehicle type approved under one or more additional regulations to the contract in the country that has ratified it under this regulation, it does not need to be repeated; In such a case, the regulation and approval numbers and the supplementary symbols of all regulations approved in the country giving approval under this regulation will be placed in the vertical columns to the right of the indicated symbol.

The checkmark shall be clearly legible and indelible. The approval mark must be placed next to or above the vehicle data plate affixed by the manufacturer. If the steering control submitted for separate approval pursuant to this regulation meets the applicable requirements of its annexes, approval of that steering control type will be granted. This only applies to steering controls without airbags.
