Performance Approval of ECE R13 Trailer Brake Components

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R13 standard. ECE R13 test regulation defines thrust/stroke/pressure characteristics for brake chambers used in pneumatic pressure brake systems to generate the necessary forces in mechanically operated brakes.

In this verification, the service brake section of a combined spring brake actuator is considered a diaphragm brake chamber. In the pressure range of 100kPa to ≥ 800kPa, at rated pressure increases of ≤ 100kPa, the full stroke range available is monitored, not allowing +5kPa deviation in applied pressure and for the corresponding thrust to occur, a stroke displacement rate of ≤10 mm/s or a stroke increase of ≤10 mm.

For each pressure increase, the corresponding average thrust (ThA) and effective stroke (sp) are determined. According to ECE R13, straightening is tested on a minimum of 6 samples. Average thrust (ThA) and Effective stroke (sp) should not deviate from these specifications by more than 4%.

Performance characteristics declared by the manufacturer; Brake compatibility requirements in Annex 10 are used to verify Type-0 cold service brake performance requirements and hot performance.

This regulation does not cover:

• Vehicles whose design speed does not exceed 25 km/h;
• Trailers that cannot be coupled to power-driven vehicles with the design speed in excess of 25 km/h;
• Vehicles fitted for invalid drivers;

Subject to the relevant provisions of this Regulation, equipment, enumerated devices, methods and conditions are not covered by this Regulation.
