ECE R29 regulation covers a total of 3 test descriptions, namely front impact, roof strength and rear wall strength.

ECE R29 Approval for Cabin Strength of Commercial Vehicles

During a frontal collision, the risk of injury or death to the occupants of the vehicle is much higher than in the case of rear-end collisions, rollovers, and collisions between a passenger car and a heavy commercial vehicle.

Cabin front surfaces of heavy commercial vehicles, especially in Europe and Asia, have a flat structure.

ECE R29 regulation covers a total of 3 test definitions: front impact, roof strength and rear wall strength:

Test A: It means a frontal crash test that aims to evaluate the resistance of a cabin in a frontal crash.
Test B: It refers to an impact test for the A-pillars of the car, which aims to evaluate the resistance of the car in a 90° rollover accident with the subsequent impact.
Test C: It refers to a car roof strength test that aims to evaluate the resistance of a car in a 180° rollover accident.

The vehicle type submitted for approval pursuant to this regulation is approved if the conditions of this regulation are met. Each approved type will be given an approval number. Its first two digits will indicate the series of changes containing the most recent major technical changes to the regulation at the time of approval.

Notification of approval or extension or refusal or withdrawal of approval or final cessation of production of a vehicle type pursuant to this Regulation shall be communicated by the parties to the agreement implementing this Regulation through a form appropriate to the model.

The cabin of the vehicle shall be designed and connected to the vehicle in such a way as to eliminate as much as possible the risk of injury to the occupants in the event of an accident. However, a vehicle type approved under Regulation 33 or Regulation 94 can be considered to have met the requirements for frontal impact.
