ECE R34 Approval of Vehicles for the Prevention of Fire Hazards

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R34 standard. The ECE R34 test regulation defines vehicle approval requirements for the prevention of fire hazards for automotive vehicles. When we look at the scope of ECE R34 regulation, it consists of 1 separate parts as Part I, Part II-2, Part II-4, Part III and Part IV.

ECE R34 Approval of Vehicles for the Prevention of Fire Hazards

Part I: Approval for liquid fuel tanks of vehicles of category M, N and O1.
Part II-1: At the manufacturer's request, in the event of a frontal or side collision of vehicles of categories M, N and O equipped with an oil tank approved in accordance with Part I or IV of this regulation, vehicles of categories M2.8 and N1 with a permissible total mass exceeding 1 tons equipped with a tank for liquid fuel. I or IV of this regulation on the prevention of fire risks in the event of a rear-end collision of vehicles and vehicles of categories M2, M3, N2, N3 and O. approval according to section.
Part II-2: Approval of category M2.8 and N1 vehicles equipped with tanks of liquid fuel approved in accordance with Part I or IV of this regulation, with a total permissible mass not exceeding 1 tonnes, in order to reduce the risk of fire in the event of a rear-end collision.
Part III: Approval of liquid fuel tanks as separate technical units.
Chapter IV: Approval of vehicles related to the assembly of tanks approved for liquid fuel.

The following tests are applied in the separate technical unit approval of liquid fuel tanks:

  • collision resistance
  • mechanical strength
  • fuel permeability
  • fuel resistance
  • Combustion resistance
  • high temperature resistance
  • Hydraulic Test
  • Tipping Test

If the vehicle submitted for approval pursuant to this Regulation meets the conditions in Part I or Part II below, that vehicle type is approved.

Tanks must meet leak tests performed when equipped with all accessories normally attached to them. It is tested at a relative internal pressure equal to twice the operating overpressure, but in no case less than an overpressure of 30 kPa (0,3 bar).

Any overpressure or any pressure exceeding the working pressure will be automatically compensated by suitable devices (vents, safety valves, etc.). Grilles will be designed to prevent the risk of fire. Especially while the tanks are being filled, any fuel that may leak will not fall on the exhaust system. It will be channeled to the ground.

Tanks must not be located within or on a surface (floor, wall, bulkhead) of the passenger compartment or any other compartment integrated with it. A partition shall be provided to separate the passenger compartment from the tanks. The compartment may include openings (for example, for locating cables) provided that it is arranged so that fuel cannot flow freely from the tank(s) into the passenger compartment or other compartment integrated with it during normal conditions of use.
