ECE R93 Approval for Front Lower Protection Devices (FUPD)

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R93 standard. The ECE R93 test regulation covers FUPDs intended for installation on vehicles of category N2 and N3. Contains the requirements of this Regulation for the installation of type-approved FUPDs on vehicles of category N2 and N3.

ECE R93 Approval for Front Lower Protection Devices (FUPD)

In terms of FUP, category N2 and N3 vehicles cover the function of the FUPD for vehicles equipped with an FUPD not separately approved by this directive, or designed or equipped in such a way that its component parts can be considered fulfillment.

N7,5 category vehicles with a maximum mass not exceeding 2 tonnes will only comply with the 400 mm ground clearance requirement set out in this regulation. Off-road vehicles in the N2G and N3G categories and vehicles that do not comply with the provisions of the front underside protection are not within the scope of this regulation.

The purpose of this regulation is to provide effective protection for vehicles of category M1 or N1 against running off the road of vehicles specified in the scope of this regulation in the event of a frontal collision.

An application for approval of a part of this regulation shall be made by the type (vehicle/FUPD) manufacturer or his duly accredited representative. Documents in triplicate giving a description of the technical characteristics of the type (vehicle/FUPD), to the extent necessary for the purpose of this regulation: dimensions, lines and component materials.

The cross-sectional height of the FUPD crossmember must not be less than 2 mm for vehicles of category N100 and 3 mm for vehicles of category N120. The side ends of the traverse should not lean forward or have a sharp outer edge; this condition is fulfilled when the lateral ends of the crossmember are externally rounded and have a radius of curvature of not less than 2,5 mm.

The device can be designed so that its position in front of the vehicle can be changed. In this case, there would be a guaranteed method of fixing it in its service location to prevent any unintentional location changes. The operator must be able to change the position of the device by applying a force not exceeding 40 daN.

The outermost surfaces of each front guard must be substantially flat or horizontally corrugated, except that the domed bolt or rivet heads may protrude up to a distance not exceeding 10 mm from the surface.
