ECE R96 Evaluation of Compression Ignition (CI) Engines of Vehicles in Terms of Pollutant Emissions

ECE R96 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of compression ignition (CI) engines of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation in terms of pollutant emissions.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts.

Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 96 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of compression-ignition (CI) engines to be mounted on agricultural and forestry tractors and non-road mobile machinery in relation to pollutant emissions and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to the emission of gaseous and particulate pollutants from CI engines:

• Used in T category vehicles with a net installed power of more than 18 kW but not more than 560 kW;
• Used in non-road mobile machinery with a net installed power of more than 18 kW but not more than 560 kW, operated at variable speed;
• Used in non-road mobile machinery with a net installed power of more than 18 kW but not more than 560 kW, operated at constant speed.

Approval of an engine means approval of an engine type and its equipment with regard to the emission level of gaseous and particulate pollutants by the engine.
