The work environment includes requirements for the patient compartment in terms of ergonomic design, safety of staff and patients.

EN 1789 Tıbbi Araçlar ve Ekipmanları - Karayolu Ambulansları

This document does not cover the training of the crew, which is the responsibility of the authorized(s) in the country where the ambulance will be registered. This document is valid for road ambulances that can transport at least one patient on a stretcher, excluding the transportation of hospital beds.

This document also specifies requirements for ambulances intended to transport transport incubator systems. This document covers the specific requirements of each type of road ambulance determined by the patient situation.

This document gives general requirements for medical devices transported in road ambulances and used inside and outside hospitals and clinics where ambient conditions may differ from normal indoor conditions.

The standard aims to gradually transform the existing 'patchwork' of ambulance design and equipment across Europe into a single set of standards. An ambulance from one country will have such common features as to be immediately recognizable by residents of another country.

Such vehicles will be sufficiently similar in design to be interchangeable with emergency medical services personnel in one country who can quickly adapt to the use of a vehicle from another country if necessary. First of all, such vehicles will be safe for those who are transported in them, those who work in them, other road users and the general public.

The requirements for the categories of road ambulances are determined in ascending order according to the level of treatment that can be performed. The standard includes both vehicle type and engine type and performance characteristics, including vehicle dimensions, acceleration rate, braking capacity, traction control, fire safety and heating/cooling.

The standard includes ergonomic requirements and design features for the patient compartment, and also imposes practical restrictions on getting patients on and off the vehicle for safety reasons. Other safety factors considered include lighting, doors and windows, cabin restraint systems, seat belt and seat attachment, seat size and position, and static test, dynamic and impact test provisions, and restriction of medical equipment.
