This standard specifies a test procedure for evaluating the scratch resistance of organic paint coatings, particularly paint coatings used in the automotive industry (ie, to evaluate car wash resistance).
Machine-based washing is simulated in a laboratory environment using a rotating brush and synthetic dirt. The test conditions are designed to be as close as possible to real conditions in a car wash. The method can also be used to test protective plastic films and plastic components, if the test parameters are chosen properly.
It is important to note that with this test procedure, test results will not remain constant over time as a result of changes in brush material. As the brush ages, the test will become more severe.
Consequently, the test procedure is only suitable for comparative testing performed at any one time and using relatively short runs. Readings obtained using equipment with different total hours of operation cannot be compared with each other.
