FMVSS 105 Test Standard for Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems

This standard specifies requirements for hydraulic and electrical service braking systems and associated parking brake systems. The purpose of this standard is to provide safe braking performance in normal and emergency situations.

FMVSS 105 Test Standard for Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems

Service brakes must be able to stop each vehicle at specified distances and speeds in effectiveness tests. There are additional requirements for stability when braking on a bend. In addition, the vehicle will be capable of overturning in the event of a partial failure of the service braking system and the failure of an inoperative brake power assist unit or brake power unit, if any.

Where applicable, each vehicle will be built with a parking brake system that, when engaged, can hold the vehicle stationary on a sloping surface for a specified period of time. Optionally, for vehicles equipped with a transmission with a parking mechanism, it can remain stationary when struck by a barrier moving at two and a half miles per hour.

Each vehicle shall be fitted with one or more brake system indicator lamps mounted in front of the driver and clearly visible. Indicator lamps will activate both when certain vehicle conditions are met and when the ignition key is turned to a certain position as a control of lamp function.

Every vehicle should have a specific brake fluid warning notice located on or near the brake fluid reservoir filler plug or cap.

Every vehicle must be able to meet all performance requirements with no separation or breakage of any visible brake fluid or lubricant on any component of the brake system and the friction surface of the brake, or leaks and filler openings in the master cylinder or brake power unit reservoir cap, gasket.

The Contractor shall provide appropriate safety measures to protect OVSC test tools and components throughout the entire conformity testing program. The contractor is also financially responsible for any acts of theft or vandalism that occur during the storage of test vehicles.
