FMVSS 111 Compliant Camera Systems Test Standard from Rostra

The FMVSS 111 standard specifies requirements for rear vision devices and systems. The purpose of this standard is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries w when the driver of a motor vehicle cannot see the rear clearly and reasonably unhindered.

This standard applies to passenger cars, multi-purpose passenger cars, trucks, buses, school buses, motorcycles and low-speed vehicles. The rollback event begins with the vehicle's direction selector positioned backwards and ends when, at the manufacturer's choice, the vehicle's forward motion reaches the following points. time means:

  • 10 mph speed,
  • 10 meters distance traveled,
  • A continuous period of 10 seconds.


Convex mirror means a mirror with a curved reflective surface whose shape is the same as the outer surface of a part of a sphere.

Active mirror surface means the parts of a mirror that reflect images, excluding the mirror frame or mounting brackets.

Peripheral test fixture means a device designed to support external components of the rear vision system for test purposes in such a way as to simulate component orientation on the vehicle during normal vehicle operation, using any factory seal to be used during normal vehicle operation. Exposure of any test condition to parts of the external component that are not exposed to the exterior of the motor vehicle.
