FMVSS 116 Test Standard for Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids

FMVSS 116 specifies requirements for fuels to be used in hydraulic braking systems of motor vehicles, containers for these fuels, and labeling of containers.

FMVSS 116 Test Standard for Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids

The purpose of FMVSS 116 is to reduce malfunctions in the hydraulic brake systems of motor vehicles due to improper production or use of contaminated fluid.

The standard covers all fluids used in the hydraulic brake systems of passenger cars, multi-purpose passenger cars, trucks, buses, trailers and motorcycles equipped with a hydraulic braking system. The fluid to be used in the referenced vehicle must be manufactured and packaged in accordance with FMVSS 116 requirements. The tests included in this test procedure are used to determine compliance with specified requirements. These tests are as follows:

  • Equilibrium Backflow Boiling Point (ERBP)
  • Wet ERBP
  • Kinematic viscosity
  • PH value
  • Fluid Stability
  • Wear
  • Flow and Appearance (Low Temperature)
  • Water Tolerance
  • compatibility
  • Resistance to Oxidation
  • Effect on SBR Cups
  • Beat Features
  • Container Information
